Call for Abstracts
The NMJ Global Forum, organized by the NMJ Alamy Milan Committee, is pleased to invite abstracts from NMJ Members residing globally. Abstracts selected by the Forum Secretariat will be eligible for publication in the NMJ Alamy Milan Forum Abstract Booklet. Abstracts will be accepted in all four conference tracks across the twenty-four focus areas. Submitters will choose a track and select focus areas for their abstracts from the list provided in the Summary of Tracks and Focus Areas below.
Abstracts with an objective insight of operations of education, health, welfare, and governance structure arms of each Jamat, focusing on their strengths, and how these can be extrapolated to a global level for the benefits of all Jamats will be selected for publication.
Tracks/Thematic Areas:
A. Health
B. Education
C. Welfare
D. NMJ Structure and Collaboration
Track A: Health
The focus of this track is to identify the broad determinants of population health and how these have contributed to health and wellbeing in different demographic populations in different Jamats. Submitters should include the models of health care in each Jamat and how health is addressed. An insight into the population demographics of each Jamat and health needs of each age stratum would provide a basic understanding of the demand of health care. Health care cost is an important determinant and should be included with views on how to address it. Views on different medical pooling schemes with pros and cons to address rising health costs would be welcome. Identifying the human health resources within all Jamats and the role of the Memon Medical Association in providing global expertise and avenues for an inter-Jamat referral system are areas of interest for the forum members. Discussion on liaison with Memon hospitals worldwide and building a solid foundation of soliciting health expertise and more from such hospitals for all Jamats would be welcome.
Focus Areas:
A1. Contribution of the Determinants of Health towards Health and Wellbeing A2. Models of Health Care Provision in various Jamats
A3. Demand for Health Care in Different Demographic Populations
A4. Role of Global or Jamat based Health Care pooling Scheme
A5. Role of Memon Medical Association in Improving Health Care across all the Jamats
A6. Collaboration with global Memon Hospitals
Track B: Education
The focus of this track is to provide an opportunity for broad discussion on areas of collaboration in furthering education – both religious and secular – of our populations. While it is understood that different Jamats use a national and/international curriculum for elementary and secondary secular education governed by geopolitical boundaries, the track focuses on higher education beyond secondary school. Submitters are encouraged to share their views on whether a singular structure which comprises representatives of different Jamats be the reference point for higher education guidance and counseling for our children. Would such a collaborative structure provide better accessibility to wider options for higher education leading to better and informed choices for our students? Submitters experienced in the higher education system of their respective countries are encouraged to submit abstracts on opportunities in their countries for the benefit of all Nasserpuria Memons worldwide. Submitters well versed with systems of integrated (religious and secular) education in their countries are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience on such. Collaboration with global Memon technical and vocational training centres would be interesting for the forum. Discussions on how such a structure can also be adopted for religious education would be welcome. The role of language and culture for youth and adolescents, and how relevant these remain, can be discussed. Innovative strategies and the increasing role of technology in providing education on language and culture across all Jamats can be applied in the discussion.
Focus Areas:
B1. Opportunities for Higher Education in different countries where our Jamats exist B2. Collaborative Structure for facilitating Higher Education for all Jamat students B3. Collaboration with global Memon technical and vocational training centres
B4. Models of Integrated (Religious and Secular) Education
B5. Relevance of Language and Culture in Today’s Time B6. Strategies to Educate Youth on Language and Culture
Track C: Welfare
The focus of this track is to zero down to the fundamental objectives of the formation of the Nasserpuria Memon Jamat in 1920. Social and economic welfare is elementary in every Jamat. The track focuses on the tenets of both social and economic welfare that are relevant in today’s time – a century after the formation of the first Nasserpuria Memon Jamat. Narratives on how existing economic empowerment and upliftment structures in Jamats have benefited members and how such systems can be further improved. Discussions on how the Jamats may encourage and assist their members who have innovative business ideas or entrepreneurship skills and how members can be assisted in setting up an enterprise. Again, would a committee representing all Jamats at a global level be more strategic in order to leverage equity funding or grants?
Yet another key area that submitters are encouraged to send abstracts on include immigration, tourism, and settlement. Discussion is encouraged on migration and settlement in foreign countries and whether a formal structure within each Jamat would help Nasserpuria Memons immigrating in that country. Facilitation of those traveling for tourism may also be included in such discussions. Submitters are also encouraged to discuss on business and investment opportunities in their countries and whether and how the Jamats can assist or advise foreign Jamat members on such investments. Again, would a structure in every Jamat be important to facilitate this process? An important aspect of social welfare is matrimonial. Discussion on whether a global matrimonial committee or individual Jamat matrimonial committees which then talk to each other to address this life process would add value to the forum. Submissions on youth, gender, and sports and again, how a collaborative approach would work to address this are encouraged
Focus Areas:
C1. Structures on Economic Empowerment and Upliftment
C2. Collaborative Structure for Memon Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Enterprise C3. Facilitation of Tourism, Immigration, and Settlement
C4. Business and Investment Opportunities in different countries where our Jamats exist C5. Need for Matrimonial Committees – Global or Jamat level
C6. Role of Youth, Gender, and Sports in our Jamats
Track D: NMJ Structure & Collaboration
The first Nasserpuria Memon Jamat was formed in Mombasa which was our entry point in Kenya and in 1920 the first formal structure was created. In 1926 the structure was revised. Further revisions came in 1932 and 1937 where a constitution was established. As emigration happened, and Jamats began to be formed in various parts of the world, each developed its own structure, governance, and administrative processes. Submitters are encouraged to provide a discussion on best practices in their structure, governance, and administrative processes. This would provide a platform for emulation where applicable. In order to achieve overall goals on health, education, and welfare, it would be a natural requirement to maintain communication and collaboration links between Jamats. As the world becomes a global village and, with the correct use of technology it is a lot easier to maintain such communication between Jamats. Would an NMJ Global Liaison Committee meet such expectations? Discussions are encouraged on the role and composition of such a Liaison Committee. The leadership and governance of such a committee should then also be discussed. Submitters are further encouraged to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of having a unified membership for individual members of each Jamat. Finally, submitters are encouraged to opine on whether a global NMJ would be a benefit for all Nasserpuria Memons worldwide.
